A distributed network of dedicated quantum technologies promises a transformative impact on global quantum communications, sensing, and computation. Satellites provide a feasible route to extending these quantum networks to global scales. With satellite-based quantum key distribution (SatQKD) often viewed as a precursor to more general distributed quantum technologies, significant progress has been made in modeling and understanding its performance. However, practical applications deal with limited resources that lead to a significant departure from expected performances. In this talk, I will highlight recent work in SatQKD that explores the impact of finite resources to determine practical performances in networked quantum communications.
